Description
This extraordinary specimen is a natural rough ruby from the historic Mogôk Stone Tract of Myanmar, the world’s most storied ruby locality. At 178.8 grams (894 carats), it represents a scale rarely documented outside of historical accounts or royal treasuries.
The ruby is preserved in its rough, irregular form, offering a rare opportunity to study ruby morphology at a monumental size. Such specimens were historically referred to in Myanmar as “nawata” or “nga mouk” rubies—large, anomalous ruby masses associated with early court collections and symbolic wealth rather than modern faceting.
This piece is accompanied by an official Gemological Institute of America (GIA, New York City) origin laboratory report, confirming Burmese origin. Under illumination, the stone displays strong internal color response consistent with Mogôk ruby material.
Due to its size, rarity, and documentation, this specimen is best suited for:
-
Advanced gem and mineral collectors
-
Institutional or museum collections
-
Reference holdings for ruby research and education
